Immunocytochemical Studies on Expression of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2(HSV-2) Antigens in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Cervix

Abstract
Herpes simplex virus type 2(HSV-2) has been considered with human cervical carcinoma by seroepidemiologic studies over decade, but there has been no clearcut evidence confirming or refuting the role of the virus in this carcinoma. Immunoperoxidase staining for HSV-2 antigen within the tissue of various types of squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix was done by peroxidase-antiperoxidase(PAP) method.
The results were as follows.
1. Reddish-brown reaction for HSV-2 antigen was in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells.
2. According to the type of squamous cell carcinoma, positive reaction was most prominent in large cell, keratinizing type, and was least in small cell type.
3. Strong positive reaction was revealed in the cytoplasm of large, pleomorphic cells.
From these results, there might be close relationship between HSV-2 and squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Ard the reaction shows some differences between the types of carcinoma.
